I’m Lauren from Loughborough University and I study English Literature. I work in the HR and operations department Anson McCade, getting involved in a huge number of projects and areas. It’s been a busy year and has completely flown by!
As an English student, people often ask me why I decided to do a placement year and it personally felt like a wise decision, as English can lack natural career steps if you are not keen to move into publishing or teaching. I was not sure what I wanted to do after graduating and being on placement has given me the space to figure out what I enjoy and am good at.
Throughout the year, my role has evolved massively but it began by managing my ever-flowing inbox, working on the company spreadsheets and a range of admin responsibilities. These tasks were important for our internal operations and provided me a huge amount of insight into how the business functions and works; it was a great foundation for my time in the ‘real world’ and helped me feel confident enough to take on much bigger projects as the time went on. Anson McCade has been hugely supportive of my development and has trusted me to work on projects that I never would normally be exposed too, such as implementing new IT software across the company! Other projects I have worked on include designing and creating company branded stationary, internal recruitment, managing our social media and liaising with our job boards. I have particularly loved working on the software research and implementation projects, because they are so focused on creating solutions and being a part of that process was really exciting and satisfying.
I have also had the great opportunity to go to our growing Belfast office whilst hosting HR team meetings for implementing new company software. Some of my other company trips have included going to careers fairs, meeting students and telling them about the graduate and placement opportunities we have available here. It was also a lovely chance to catch up with my friends during the Loughborough University Careers Fair!
Looking back over the last year, I have learnt a huge amount about myself and what I am passionate about. Anson McCade has definitely helped me to feel prepared for after graduation and provided me with a much clearer insight of what I want to spend some time working on and developing personally as I go into my final year of university.
Thank you to everyone at Anson McCade, you have all been so kind and supportive of me and have always had time to give me some advice or to lend a helping hand. You are all amazing and good luck to the new placement students!
