Why did you decide to do a placement year?
I actually decided to do a placement year as soon as I decided what degree I wanted to do. I have held a job my whole way through school and university; I enjoy meeting new people and challenging myself. I also did some research and found out that students who complete a placement year generally do better in final year.
Why did you chose Anson McCade?
I had quite a hard time finding a placement, I was pretty much left to my own devices when searching for a placement as my university did not have many connections in Northern Ireland and I knew I wanted to come home for placement. Anson McCade were very welcoming, when I came in for interviews people smiled, said “Hello” and this made me feel at ease. During interview stages, I was told exactly what to expect in my role, people did not shy away from this. However, I was also told how to deal with things that go wrong and how I would be rewarded.
At the start of your placement, what did you hope to achieve or learn?
My personal goal was to make connections in the Tech industry. I am about to finish uni and I want to have a network of people I can reach out to who already know about my work ethic. However, there was also a great opportunity for me to make good money here.
From the placement, I learned to be resilient for sure. Recruitment is an industry in which you have a lot of backlash and face a lot of let downs. You need to get up and go again! I will definitely take away the structure that Anson McCade has given to me. We followed a daily structure that really added to my success.
What challenges did you face?
In the beginning it was the long hours, with no success. It took me a couple of months to receive a first offer. Behind the scenes I was working late and arriving early and it was hard to keep motivation up when I wasn’t seeing success. However, as soon as the first offer came through it was all worth it!
What advice would you give to other students?
Listen to every piece of advice the team will give you, it will be a lot at first but it will come in useful later. Get to know all of the account managers and what roles they have on. Sometimes looking at something new can help you strike gold!
