My time at Anson McCade- Business Placement.
Hi I’m Jess, from the University of Brighton studying Business Management with Marketing. I wanted to do a placement first of all, to put what I was learning into practice, but also to see, in an actual business environment, what I do and do not enjoy. I applied for the role at Anson McCade as it offered insight into many different aspects of business, and would provide me with valuable practical experience. Twelve months in and I can safely say, I definitely have accumulated a massive wealth of business understanding and experience!
What does my role entail?
My role here at Anson McCade has evolved massively from starting with administrative and adhoc tasks to focusing more on Internal Recruitment, and various HR Functions across both our London and Belfast office as well as Event Management. My role suddenly became extremely busy and varied; I was frequently flying to Belfast for work, on-boarding and training new consultants whilst liaising directly with Peter Gamble, our Belfast Director, helping him in running the day-to-day tasks of the office. Whilst also managing the internal company database, looking for innovative ways to help the consultants, training/on-boarding consultants in our London HQ, and reporting directly to our MD.
My main highlight would have to be travelling between offices for work, it was always so much fun and something that I definitely didn’t expect to be able to do on placement! Another highlight has to be successfully organising company events and arranging our first ever Anson Awards in our London HQ- when everyone has a great time at something I’ve put together it gives a real sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. One final accomplishment which I am very proud of is producing training manuals and reports which have been implemented and will be used after I leave Anson McCade.
The advice I would give to a new placement student is that to always own up to your mistakes, they will happen and making excuses does not leave a good impression! Placement years are designed to teach you things and skills you didn’t know you would need, and bring out skills you didn’t even know you had. Take every opportunity and enjoy it!
In this placement, I have had the most invaluable experience, and learnt new skills about myself and what is needed in a working environment in order to succeed. The learning curve has been extremely steep and I have said yes to projects I have no clue how to execute, but learnt and successfully delivered. Doing a placement is something I would recommend to anyone, and especially working in an environment such as Anson McCade where the responsibility is real – you can’t hide behind your “Placement” title.
Thank you to everyone in Anson McCade; to our amazing London office for the support, help and memories over the past year, and, of course to our Belfast office for always making me feel welcome when I would come over and for showing me what Belfast has to offer, I genuinely will miss you all!
Anson McCade, it really has been a pleasure. Good luck to all the placement students starting with us, this really is a placement you won’t forget!
