A leading UK-based technology services provider is seeking a skilled and motivated Linux Engineer to support and maintain complex live systems for a high-profile client. This customer-facing position requires a confident communicator with a strong technical background in Linux environments, as well as the drive to continuously grow and develop their expertise across current and emerging technologies.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced infrastructure or support engineer looking to work with enterprise-level IT solutions in a collaborative and innovative environment.


Role Overview

The Linux Engineer will be responsible for the monitoring, maintenance, and support of Linux systems across a variety of platforms and technologies. Working as part of an established team, the successful candidate will manage incidents, troubleshoot performance issues, and contribute to the configuration and implementation of secure, scalable IT infrastructure.

The position requires a strong customer service orientation, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and resolve issues within agreed SLAs and KPIs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day support of Linux servers and applications across enterprise environments

  • Monitor system status and report incidents or risks to relevant teams and service managers

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues using strong scripting and diagnostic skills

  • Configure and deploy Linux servers and maintain documentation for build processes and operational procedures

  • Use automation tools (e.g., Ansible) to streamline configuration and system management

  • Deliver technical mentorship to junior team members and contribute to upskilling the wider team

  • Maintain high customer satisfaction by clearly understanding user needs and delivering prompt resolutions

  • Support additional infrastructure projects or initiatives as directed by Service Delivery Managers

  • Ensure adherence to security standards and contribute to the development of secure IT environments


Skills & Experience Required

  • Proven experience in Linux system administration and IT infrastructure support

  • Proficient in scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, KSH)

  • Hands-on experience with automation tools (especially Ansible)

  • Experience with enterprise backup solutions such as NetApp, SAN, or Cohesity

  • Strong understanding of security protocols, encryption, digital certificates, and antivirus tools

  • Solid knowledge of VMware environments, including host deployment and affinity rules

  • Familiarity with hardware components and their interaction with operating systems

  • Comfortable working in client-facing roles, with excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Prior exposure to Solaris and legacy UNIX systems (e.g., Solaris 5.7, 10.x, 11.x)

  • Experience with RHEL (versions 5.x to 9.x) and Debian (versions 10.x, 11.x)


Working Hours & Location

  • Standard hours: Monday to Friday, between 07:00–19:00, covering 37 hours per week

  • Rotating shift pattern (e.g., 07:00–15:30 or 10:30–19:00) as directed by service management

  • Opportunities for hybrid working may be available, subject to service requirements and managerial approval
