Linux Engineer
Location: Stevenage (Initially on-site, with shared WFH flexibility post-onboarding)
Base Salary: £45,000
Estimated Total Package: £57,000+ (including 10% DV Bonus, up to 5% Bonus, 10% Pension, Private Healthcare, Dental, and more)
A highly secure technology programme supporting national infrastructure is looking to expand its team with a Linux Engineer. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a close-knit support team at the heart of a mission-critical environment undergoing significant modernisation.
Ideal for someone with a strong Linux system administration background (RedHat or Solaris), this role blends live service support with the opportunity to contribute to automation, scripting, and system upgrades.
The Role:
As a Linux Engineer, you’ll be responsible for resolving technical incidents, building and configuring Linux environments, and contributing to the delivery of project-based workstreams. Working within a small team, you'll provide vital support for live systems while helping evolve the underlying infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver 2nd/3rd line technical support through a ticket-based system
- Monitor and maintain live services across RedHat, Debian, and Solaris systems
- Automate tasks using Bash, Python, KSH, or Ansible
- Contribute to infrastructure automation, backup solutions, and modernisation projects
- Support VMware host deployments and configurations (e.g. affinity rules)
- Work with backup technologies including NetApp, SAN, and Cohesity
- Maintain clear documentation and offer guidance to junior team members
- Engage with customers and stakeholders in a secure, high-trust environment
Key Skills & Experience:
- Strong experience in Linux system administration (RedHat, Solaris, Debian)
- Automation/scripting knowledge using Bash, Python, Ansible, or Linux command line tools
- Exposure to VMware infrastructure (host deployment, rules configuration)
- Understanding of backup systems (NetApp, SAN, Cohesity) is highly desirable
- Comfortable in a customer-facing role with strong communication skills
- Good knowledge of system security (device encryption, antivirus tools, digital certs)
Clearance Requirements:
- Must be born in the UK and eligible for SC clearance (with progression to DV clearance)
- 10% DV Bonus paid monthly upon achieving clearance
Working Pattern:
- 37 hours per week, Mon–Fri
- Shift-based hours: 07:00–15:30 or 10:30–19:00
- Initial full-time on-site; hybrid options may be available once established
